DESIGNATIONS OF ORIGIN

The fundamental objective of differentiated quality denominations is to protect those agri-food products that have additional quality attributes, derived from compliance with standards that go beyond the mandatory requirements of commercial or standard quality, distinguishing and guaranteeing their authenticity and the principle of truthfulness of the labelling, and implementing a control system that inspires confidence in the market.

Among the different figures of differentiated quality that currently exist are the Denominations that protect geographical indications,  the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), with which foods are designated whose quality, characteristics or reputation is linked to a specific geographical origin; Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG), which cover foods with specific characteristics derived from the production method, as well as Organic Production and Integrated Production, mentions which refer to the use of an environmentally friendly production system to obtain the protected foods.

The wine sector deserves a special mention given that the aforementioned European quality figures (PDO and PGI) coexist in Spain with other levels established in the national and Andalusian protection system, offering complementary information, so that within the wine PDO can be distinguished 4 levels of quality: Quality Wine with Geographical Indication, Designation of Origin (DO), and Qualified Desigination of Origin, while the PGI of the sector correspond at national level with the Wines of the Land. On the other hand, the spirits have their own community regulations that allow their recognition by means of a Geographical Indication (IGBE).
